Welcome Teachers Open House @ the Library and CCPS PTO Partnership
School has started for another year, and the library is getting its fall lineup of activities ready to go, too.
We started out the school year with an Open House for the Teachers of Nebraska Christian and Central City Public Schools. About 75 people attended our celebration. We had stations set up showing the teachers how we can be of help to them during the school year, with projects on the Cricut cutting machine; elementary and secondary websites to add a little "zing" to their decor; e-reader and Kindle information for how to use the Nebraska Overdrive system to download library books at no charge; and other technology. Each teacher got a decal to take home of either a Bison or an Eagle, showing another way the Cricut could be used. We hope to be a partner for education with the schools and provide whatever we can in the way of assistance and materials.
The public school PTO group sponsored a reading incentive program this past summer that worked very well in partnership with our library. They offered small prizes for every child who turned in a sheet explaining the book that they read, and at the end of the summer a lucky winner in each of the grades 1-4 were selected to receive a Kindle.
Grants helped provide thefinancial assistance for all the prizes. The competition was "fierce," and the smiles were evident on the kids' faces when they announced the winners. The library had almost 5,000 books checked out this summer, so both the library and the school were WINNERS! Kids stayed in the reading mode for the summer, and our circulation increased, too.
