4-5 Year-Old Programs

4-5 YEAR-OLD STORY CORNER
2012 Summer Reading Program Schedule
June 4, 11, 18, 25, and July 9 & 16

Each week there will be a guest reader and a different theme.  A specific pre-literacy skill or format will be featured and a handout sheet will be given to those who attend that will explain the concept.  So  often these are activities or ideas you already do as a parent, but this may help explain just WHY some of these preschool things are so important in a child’s reading readiness development.  Many times we don’t even realize that some of the seemingly trivial things we do with our children really does have an important role in preparing them for school.

For most sessions, Story Corner will be a time for your child to learn how to be in a group situation without a parent or other siblings present, so we are asking parents to leave their children in the meeting room with the adult leaders.  There will be tea or coffee for the  adults and visiting time in the children’s area.  If you wonder how your child is doing, you can peek in through the glass window at the door in the hallway.  Parents and the public are invited to attend the following 3 programs with their children:  “Helen’s Musical Hats Show,”  Magical Paradise Exotic Farm’s ”Creatures of the Night,” and the Magic Show with Jeff Quinn.Story Corner Schedule and Weekly Themes

REGISTRATION DAYS FOR THE SUMMER READING PROGRAM START FRIDAY, MAY 25

Each day during registration week we will have a different craft for you to do.  Pick the ONE day you want to "create," and enjoy doing an art-y project that we will hang in our art gallery in the library.

Come in any time between 10 AM and 4 PM on Friday, the 25th, and create a work of art much like Van Gogh!  Only we'll be using shaving cream and liquid watercolor to create a print masterpiece in the style of the master.

If you register on Tuesday, May 29, you can create space monsters and aliens using a spin- art machine and plastic straws.  Googly eyes add to the alien-ish look.

Wednesday will be spent working on "Orbitz," crazy designs made by swinging a paint-filled cup around above a piece of paper.  The pattern created looks like the orbital path of a planet.

Thursday is called "POP in and Register."  There won't be any craft projects but a couple of spacey games you can try your hand at and you can leave with a bag of popcorn.

Friday is designated "Haunted Paper Projects" Day. There will be a number of pre-printed shapes and objects that you can cut out, glue together, and create spooky looking houses, masks, skull flippers and other things.

Be sure to sign up ahead of time so we know how much in the way of supplies  and rides we  will need.  We will need a few parents to volunteer to drive.

By the way, the library program at 10 AM the next day is all about constellations and stars, and if the weather is nice we will be doing some star gazing  at the senior high using the school’s BIG telescopes and space binoculars.

Let's Scare the Middle School Kids!!!

Let's Scare the Middle School Kids!!! Monday night, June 4, there is going to be a full moon. We are having a special event for any/all current middle school kids, but it might just be too SCARY for some!!! Because of the popularity of the Twilight series, we are going to have "Twilight at the Tombstones" that evening from 8-10 PM at the CC Cemetery. Local historians will give us some insights to some of the creepier tales of the area, as well as talk about the different kinds of interesting tombstones. Then everyone will get a chance to do some tombstone rubbings of old gravestones and create interesting graphics. You must sign up for this event so we can have enough paper and other materials on hand for everyone. You can even dress up like a vampire or a ghoul if you want! Speaking of creepy tales of the area....have you ever heard the legend of the witch's grave at the Aurora Cemetery? Google "witch's grave aurora, ne" and quite a few hits come up. Here are some pictures taken recently of the grave:
